Men’s Basketball: SCC Staves Off CCC
The Central Community College men's basketball team lost to Southeast Community College, 75-72, on Saturday at the Raider Fieldhouse.
The Storm set the tone early with a 10-2 run out of the gate and went on to lead by 17 points midway through the first half. The Raiders went to work and pulled to within nine points at 45-36 with 1:44 to play. Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the half and SCC held the nine-point advantage at halftime.
CCC opened the second half with a 16-8 run to pull within two points, 53-51. However, the Storm went back up by nine points, 62-53, with 12:23 to play. Over the next 10 minutes, the Raiders outscored the Storm, 19-11, to pull to within one, 73-72, with 2:34 remaining. However, it was as close as the Raiders would get as they went 0-6 the rest of the way and the Storm left town with the 75-72 victory.
"Our defense picked up in the second half and we guarded well enough to win, but we simply didn't hit enough shots to pull it out," said CCC head coach John Ritzdorf. "I'm really pleased with our effort, and we played much better than we did earlier this week, but moral victories are no fun. We need to find a way to pull some of these close games out down the stretch."
Kevin Cook tallied a double-double with 20 points and had 13 rebounds while Jayden Byabato scored 20 points. Caleb Muia finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds.
The loss gives CCC a 12-7 record heading into Wednesday night's home game with Iowa Western Community College. The Reivers and Raiders get underway at 6 p.m. at the Raider Fieldhouse.
