Women’s Basketball: Sophomore Night Thriller
The Central Community College women's basketball needed overtime to defeat Southeast Community College, 97-88, on Monday night at the Raider Fieldhouse.
The Storm opened took the first quarter, 28-22, before the Raiders outscored SCC in the second quarter, 27-18, to take a 49-46 halftime lead. Southeast held Central to nine total points in the third quarter and had a 63-58 edge when the period expired. In the final stanza, the Raiders went to work and took an 82-80 lead with 38 seconds remaining on Brittney Veik's jumper. SCC's Kaylee Klover tied the game at 82 apiece with 29 seconds to go, leaving the Raiders with a chance to take the last shot. However, CCC's Amy Mitchell missed two shots, forcing the extra session. CCC claimed the overtime win by outscoring SCC, 15-6.
"That first quarter kind of shocked us because they play so fast and shoot the ball so well," said CCC head coach Billy Perkins. "We weathered the storm and just continued to fight."
Mitchell led all scorers with 33 points while Veik tallied 25 points. Madisen Jelinek finished with 18 points.
Prior to tip-off, CCC sophomores Morgan Boldt, Julia Jurek, Bailey Keller, Macey Thege and Veik were recognized before playing their final regular season home game.
"These sophomores are not only good teammates, but they are all great people and have done everything I have asked of them," said Perkins.
With the win, CCC evened its record at 10-10.
Up next, the Raiders will close out the regular season with a road venture at Southeast Community College on Saturday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
