Women’s Basketball: Raiders Hold Off Bears
The Central Community College women's basketball team survived a scare en route to a 67-58 home win over Des Moines Area Community College on Saturday. CCC's victory closed out the Bank of the Valley Classic.
The Bears bested the Raiders in the first quarter, 17-13. As in the previous contest, CCC's defense clamped down in the second quarter, holding DMACC to six points. The Raiders took a 35-23 lead at the half.
Following a close third quarter, CCC led 51-38. The Bears rattled off an 11-2 run over the first six minutes of the fourth quarter to pull to within five points, 53-49. Following a 30-second timeout, CCC built a 10-point cushion starting with a Julia Jerek jump shot, two Amy Mitchell free throws and Brittney Veik's jumper to make the score 59-49 with 1:59 to play. The Bears were unable to overcome the deficit and the Raiders took the 67-58 victory.
"I was very proud of our team," said CCC head coach Billy Perkins. "Our defensive effort was really good. This was a huge step in the right direction."
Veik led four CCC players in double figures with 23, while Madison Jelinek posted a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Mitchell came off the bench to score 12 points while Jurek finished with 10 points.
With the win, the Raiders improve to 2-1 and will return to action on Tuesday night with a road venture at Northeast Community College. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
